Day 7-Sewing

For a long time, I have wanted to learn how to sew.  I took a sewing class this spring, and one of my sisters patiently spent two days instructing me over the summer.
This weekend I took another class and finally made the decision to buy a sewing machine.

I researched online, asked my sister and bought one today.
I spent most of the day playing with it.  There was minimal swearing.

I sent my sister pictures of my work as the day went on.  I compared sewing to cooking, which I love to do.  Every mistake or mishap is an opportunity to learn.
Be there at our labors

I thought this only applied to work, to real work or chores.  This is about feeling that mindful presence in the fun activities too.  The activities that go by so fast that people start asking about dinner, and you thought you just ate lunch.
These activities that everyone finds joy in are special.  One of my favorite things about cooking is when the people I cook for enjoy the food.  That makes me happy.  And today, I had all kinds of special sewing requests from my family, even Billy.  The man has sweatpants that are falling apart and should be tossed, but who I am I to argue with comfort.  So I fixed them the best I could (for my skills and the threadbare fabric) and he was happy.  I made the beanies pictured at the beginning of this post for my girls, and they were thrilled.  They were made from old t-shirts.  I made one for one of the dolls as well, although, that wasn’t intended, it was one of those learning experiences.

Here’s a view from the back.  Lucy wore hers all day while reading and playing.
And the best part is that no one is obsessed about perfection here.

Thankfully they feel the same about my cooking too.

  1. I love that about cooking too - spending time doing something enjoyable, but also others are blessed by the end result as well. Glad you were able to spend time doing something you found so rewarding. Sewing scares me a bit. Haha

  2. I think it still scares me too. Sometimes I get a little fearful stepping on the pedal! :)
